Working in the construction industry is a difficult but very rewarding job. However, using heavy-duty equipment, working in high places and building new structures means that construction workers are constantly putting themselves in danger. Luckily, you can prevent many accidents and injuries by wearing proper safety equipment. Consider some of the more commonly worn pieces and learn why you may need this gear.
Eye Protection
Be it goggles or safety glasses, proper eye protection is key for anyone in the construction industry. Ideally, your eyewear will match the task at hand. If you are working with chemicals, you may need a different type of eyewear than if you are welding or working with fine grit. Even those who wear glasses on a regular basis can find protective eye cover that works with their normal eyewear.
Ear Protection
Many jobs in construction involve working with loud machinery or constant clanging. Proper earplugs or other forms of protection can help prevent hearing loss, especially among those who work in construction for many years.
Gloves
Gloves can serve multiple purposes for construction. Those who work with jackhammers and other vibrating machinery need gloves to protect the hands from the vibrations, while welders need to prevent burns. Other workers may need special gloves to improve their grip when climbing or moving among machinery.
Choosing the right boots for the job is one of the most important safety considerations a construction worker can make. Steel-toed boots are ideal if there is a chance of dropping objects on the feet, and high leather boots are a must when working in certain environments. Mens waterproof work boots may be a necessity for working in outdoor or high-moisture environments since they can protect the feet from being wet all day. Do not try to get by with just any pair—good fitting, comfortable boots that are right for the job are worth the investment.
Body Coverage
While some workers can get by fine with rugged high-quality jeans and a work shirt, wearing the right outfit can be essential to help prevent accidents and injuries. Find out what the preferred coverage is for your line of work, and do not deviate from the requirements. Some jobs require a jumpsuit, others a work vest and still others may need heavy-duty “armor.” If you will be working at night or in low-visibility areas, a brightly colored reflective vest or jacket can be an essential addition to a construction safety wardrobe too.
Depending on the type of construction work you will be doing, there may be a need for any or all of these pieces. In addition, you could need other additional equipment such as harnesses, heatproof suits, and other accessories. The most important thing is that you match your equipment to the job at hand and that you always wear the necessary gear.
