What Exactly is Graphene?

Several advancements in human technology have created some of the most amazing inventions out there today. From medicines to microchips, these revolutionary inventions have truly shaped the world to turn it into what it is today.

Humanity has not yet stopped discovering and achieving great things as of today. Currently, numerous people are still working on different things to push the boundaries of science for the betterment of mankind and one of the latest technologies with endless applications today is Graphene.

The Basics

Explaining and understanding graphene and its technicalities is a task rather not simple. A person with insufficient background in Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering is not the best candidate to explain these things. Graphene is a semi-metal which is the allotrope form of carbon which then means that it is a structural modification of the element that happens when the atoms of the element are bonded differently.

The carbon atoms in graphene is arranged in what is called the hexagonal lattice and is the basic structural element for some of the substances you are familiar with such as graphite, diamond, charcoal, etc.

What’s so special about it?

Currently, it is the strongest material ever tested so that says something about it already, right? Furthermore, graphene can efficiently conduct heat and electricity faster and is nearly transparent. The material also exhibits a special characteristic call diamagnetism which is also exhibited by regular graphite but much weaker and smaller.

More specifically, graphene is a zero-gap semiconductor which also has the potential for thermal management due to its extremely high melting point. Apart from that the dimensions of this material is also very compact and convenient for mechanical use and its biological features are not that researched yet but is showing great promise.

The Applications

From coatings to energy conduction, from sensors and to the medical field, Graphene is one of the most versatile materials out there. As you may have sensed in its features, graphene can really be used in various fields.

Due to its size and conductivity, graphene can be used in devices such as mobile phones. It’s potential to store energy is also being looked at as a possible avenue for it to be used as an alternative to batteries. Combine these two properties and you may just have a superfast charger. This is just one of the possible applications of Graphene and if you wish to learn more you may visit Graphene – Home page.
