USB Flash Drives 2.0 vs 3.0

USB drives have been an essential to computer users for years. They have evolved since they were first created, with the most recently released standard being USB 3.1 which was released in July of 2013. A flash disk is known for protecting your files from being lost or damaged from your computer. People of all different ages take advantage of USB drives. Many of people love to stay up to date with technology so that they are considered chic.

USB drives have been an essential accessory to computer users for years.  USB drives have steadily evolved since their creation, with the most recently released standard being USB 3.1.  Typically used as a portable storage solution, the USB drive is a ubiquitous piece of technology that people depend on every day.  As the size of files that are generated in today’s modern workplace get larger and larger, the need for faster and larger USB drives arises now more than ever.

Millions of people are not computer savvy and just buy the newest version assuming it is the best version. Others choose the cheaper option; they face the problem of compatibility. Over time machines will become outdated faster and are not always compatible with other types that they may have. Most of the time the newer version includes most of the specs of the older version. Over the years many of the specs change and some are added while others are taken out due to being outdated or finding something that is better or more efficient.

Users

The USB 1.0 standard was released over 19 years ago in January of 1996 and are no longer sold in stores because they are outdated. Before the 1.0 version they had other versions but they made it widely known to everyone about the 1.0 version. 4 years later, the 2.0 version was released with multiple changes from the older version. The question now is what is the difference between the 2.0 and the 3.0 versions? The main differences are the transfer rates, physical build, and power management.

There was an 8 year span between the release date of the 2.0 and 3.0 version of a flash disk. Within those 8 years many of tests were conducted and many of changes that made the 3.0 version more effective and faster. An easy way to tell the difference between the two is that the 2.0 version is gray while the 3.0 version is blue. The difference in color is visible on the inside of the USB plug.  There is also a little bit of a size difference that is only noticeable to some people at first but,  greatly noticed when being plugged into a port that is not the correct size.

Transfer Rates

All 2.0 USBs offer the transfer rate of 480 Mbps while 3.0 USBS are 10 times faster. 3.0 USBs can transfer at rates of 4.8 Gbps. The transfer speeds can also depend on your device, USB ports, and cables. The max transfer rate is 5 Gbps for 2.0 bus type. For the 3.0 bus type the max transfer rate is 8 Gbps. So if you want faster transfer rates 3.0 is the type for you.

Physical Build

When they came out with the 3.0 version they doubled the amount of wires from the 2.0 having 4 wires and the 3.0 having 8 wires. Since the 3.0 version has double the wires it give it the ability to transfer files a much faster rate. The wires require more space which make the 3.0 slightly bigger than the 2.0 version. You are able to plug in 2.0 into 3.0 ports but not 3.0 into 2.0 ports, due to the size difference.

Power Management

USB 2.0 can provide only up to 500mA while USB 3.0 provides up to 900mA. This allows devices that take a lot of power to now be bus powered. The 3.0 also provides better power efficiency, it offered less power for idle states and also to cut power completely when not being used.

The worst things that can happen with outdated or older USB drives are that they break or become not compatible with current technology. Most people use a flash disk to keep their important files safe from being lost or damaged from your computer crashing to the filing being deleted by a different user of the computer.

Many of people utilize USB drives regularly including big name companies. They use them to keep their very critical files safe. Many business people love to be chic and are willing to spend the extra money to keep their files safe and to be considered a better company you need to be up to date on your technology.  Even custom USB drives has also become the fantastic promotion tools for business who life to gift these items to potential clients & customers.
