The Secret To Making Dirty Grout Lines Disappear

The Secret To Making Dirty Grout Lines Disappear

Tile floors are known for making almost any type of spill extremely easy to clean up, whether it’s crumbs, salt, mud, or even broken glass. Accidentally spill a bag of sugar? No problem. Simply get out the vacuum and take care of it. Even red wine, milk, or ‘droppings’ from your new puppy are easily cleaned on a tile floor. Just sweep or vacuum, rinse with clean water, let dry, and you’re done.

Although the actual tiles themselves are easy to clean, the grout that runs between them is a different story. They often absorb every little bit of dirt, debris, and grime that comes their way. Like endless grid lines, they spread across your floor making it difficult to get your tile floor as clean as it should be. Thankfully, cleaning dirty grout lines is much easier than most people think. With just a bit of elbow grease and some standard household products, your dirty tile floors will look showroom new in no time. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Clean Grout Lines

Like cleaning out the refrigerator or gutters on the house, cleaning dirty grout lines have always been a household chore that most people dread. Vacuuming and mopping are a breeze compared to scrubbing dirty, grimy grout lines. However, if you know the secret to cleaning them the easy way, the task becomes much simpler. All you need is a little bit of time and one of many household products you probably already have on hand right now.

Since grout is porous in nature, it easily absorbs spilled liquids, oils, dirt, grease, etc. In order to really clean those dirty grout lines, you could easily just buy a commercial grout cleaner. On the other hand, you can save a great deal of money by avoiding these often harsh chemicals and instead find what you need in your own kitchen. A very good alternative is using a nylon brush. These are excellent for cleaning on hardened grout and cause no damage to the tile. Another way of maintaining beautiful tiles is by frequently sealing your tiles with sealants. This can be done by purchasing a sealant from your nearby household store and apply using a soft brush.

Here are Some Effective Options to Choose From:

• Mix ½ cup of vinegar, ¼ cup of lemon juice, and ¼ cup of baking soda with 4 cups of water. Spray or sprinkle on the grout lines and let the mixture sit. Next, use a sponge or nylon brush to scrub up the residue and rinse.

• Make a solution using powdered oxygen bleach and warm water. Apply to dirty grout lines rather heavily. Use more if it soaks in. Let the solution sit for a minimum of 30 minutes or as long as 6 hours if necessary; the longer the better. Keep scrubbing the lines and apply more solution as you go. Rinse with clean water.

• Make a cleaning paste out of water and baking soda. Rub the paste into the grout lines and let it soak in overnight. In the morning, scrub the residue off using an old toothbrush or nylon brush.

Once your grout lines are squeaky clean, consider applying a quality silicone-based sealer to your floor’s grout lines in order to prevent any future stains from penetrating the grout and soiling them again. It’s easy and will ultimately save you time, energy, and money in the future.

Use any one of these super easy methods to clean your floor’s grout lines. Not only are they eco-friendly for both children and pets, they’re much less expensive as well. Then again, some people simply don’t have the time to deal with dirty grout lines. If this is you, just call an expert to get a professional floor/grout cleaning job.
