The Bariatric Surgery Option

Even though weight loss and exercise are the most common forms of treatment for obesity, it is an open secret that they may not work for everyone. There are different factors that may cause some people’s bodies not to respond positively to these very common and popular weight loss methods and they will need another option if they are going to avoid the serious weight related health issues. This is where bariatric surgery in India comes into play; bariatric treatment refers to a number of weight-loss related surgical procedures that are available to assist severely obese patients to shed off excess weight.

First and foremost, a person who is considered a candidate for bariatric surgery will not necessarily be someone who has tried several other traditional weight loss methods with very little success if any. The most common candidates for bariatric surgery will be someone who is at high risk of developing a condition that is related to their weight in addition to people that have genetic conditions that are associated with obesity. This is the reason you need to consult with a bariatric surgeon before you can consider yourself a likely candidate and discuss any other available alternatives.

There are different types of bariatric treatment methods that you can choose from in cooperation with a qualified and experienced bariatric surgeon. A good example is that gastric bypass which is among the most common methods of bariatric surgery; this form of treatment involves the bariatric surgeons stapling the patient’s intestines in such a way that the usable portion of the stomach gets greatly reduced in order to allow food to reach the small intestines faster. Once a patient has gone through this form of treatment, the y must henceforth be careful about their eating habits because of the reduced size of their stomach. There are several variations of this type of bariatric treatment but because of the reduced stomach size, it can only handle smaller food portions and will not be able to tolerate fatty and sugary foods.

There is yet another type of bariatric surgery that is known as the adjustable gastric band; this method works by reducing a patient’s appetite and slowing down digestion and limiting the intake of food by the use of an inflatable plastic band. The band will be placed around the upper part of a patient’s stomach so as to essentially reduce the size of the stomach without interfering with the stomach or intestines in any permanent way. The patient’s new stomach henceforth accommodate only half a cup of food which is usually about 12 times less than the size of many typical stomachs; the band can be adjusted as needed in response to the patient’s progress in weight loss. There are several other options available that your bariatric surgeon should be able to explain.
