Starting With Your Meditation Routine

Meditation has a number of benefits for you, from being more healthy and happy to having your emotional state in balance.

You will see, as you go on with your meditation routine, how your health improves. Starting with meditating does have some challenges, but they can easily be passed when you follow these tips we give you.

1. Posture

Always keep your spine straight and your head up. Balance your body, and your mind will follow. Just imagine your head touching the sky, and you’ll be straight in a matter of seconds.

2. Your eyes

They should be open. In that way, you will be more present. But, don’t force your eyes open. Let your eyes be soft, let your look be soft. But, comfort is essential here so if you don’t feel comfortable keeping your eyes open, be free to close them.

3. Focusing

Be present in the moment. We rarely do that in our lives. We tend to let things happen and we kind of work on auto pilot mode. When meditating, shut off that auto pilot and be present. Be aware of your surroundings and be aware of yourself when meditating.

4. Breathing

Pay attention to your breath and be aware. This also refers to the previous point. Feel your breath as it goes in and out of your body. But don’t try to control it, let it flow freely.

5. Thinking

Don’t try to block your thoughts. Let them come to you and fly away as they like. When you start getting more experienced, these thoughts will come less and less. Don’t attach yourself to them. Let them go.

6. Strong emotions

Strong emotions can come in your way when meditating. Especially negative strong emotions like anger, fear and shame will breed in your mind and make it difficult to meditate. A good way to fight this is to focus on the physical feeling the emotions cause. For example, if anger is making you feel tight in your chest, focus on that. Soon, they will fade away.

7. Sounds

Be in a silent place. Some people like to use special music for meditating, but as the saying goes, silence is golden.

8. Duration

A good duration for starters would be somewhere around 10 minutes. If you feel like going for more, be free to do it. Over time, as you gain more experience, you can meditate for longer periods. But, as we said before, comfort comes first, so whatever feels best for you, do it.

9. Location

Find your special place to sit and use it as meditation ground. Maybe build a shrine if you feel like it. There are two things that are necessary though, silence and lots of natural light. Block the noise, and make sure you get plenty of day light. But, just to be sure, you might want to consider putting up blinds, because too much light can bother you, so reducing it a bit might help.

10. Enjoy yourself

The whole point behind meditation is to be happy and in balance. If you don’t enjoy it, don’t do it. It’s simple as that.
