SELLING YOUR RV OUT OF STATE? POINTS TO REMEMBER

Who can help me sell my RV online? How can I seal the deal faster? How to get the maximum price for my rig?  These are some of the basic questions that all first-time RV sellers keep asking themselves.  Given the range of complexities involved in such high-value transactions, it is only natural that you would like to learn the secrets behind a speedy and lucrative deal. We can tell you about one – be open to selling out of your state to expand your choice. Conservative RV buyers always prefer to make a purchase near their homes, but this mentality has drastically changed over the recent years. Online advertising expanded the reach of both buyers and sellers to far away markets. Buyers no longer shy away from making an out-of-state purchase if they spot an attractive deal. However, as a seller, you must be aware of your state’s laws with regard to out-of-the-state sale.  Although these laws greatly vary from one state to another, this guide will provide you a generic view on the matter:

Opt for Cash Transaction

It becomes difficult for sellers to track down a fraudulent buyer when he/she flees to another state. Tell your buyer in advance that you are not going to accept anything except cash for payment. A banker’s check is also a safe option. Availing these two modes of transactions will prevent you from becoming a scam victim.  Offer to accompany the buyer to his bank so that you can ensure his fund’s authenticity and may even deposit the money in your account right away.

Ask for a Driver’s License Photocopy

Request the buyer to submit a photocopy of his driver’s license prior to the sale. In some states, this information is only optional. But some states make it compulsory as it has to be listed on the reassigned title.

Ask for an Insurance Card Photocopy

Different states have different laws regarding the insurance of pre-owned vehicles. Some states require buyers to purchase a new insurance policy specific to the newly bought vehicle, mentioning the transaction.  But in most states, the newly purchased unit can be covered under the driver’s other insurance policies. If you reside in any of these states, keep a copy of your buyer’s valid insurance card.

Abide by the DMV Rules

Regardless of his/her state of residence,  your buyer is required to go to your local DMV office, especially if your state’s DMV requires the buyer to use a temporary registration and license plate during his stay in your state after the purchase. These temporary numbers help legalize the vehicle’s stay on your state’s road. The buyer is allowed to use these numbers until his/her state’s DMV office issues a fresh set of numbers. Ideally, the buyer must transfer the title as soon as he returns to his home state. Be watchful of the buyer’s activities till he gets the job done, as you will be liable for paying all traffic violation fines during this interim period.

Draft a Bill Of Sale

The photocopy of the front and backside of the reassigned title can double as a bill of sale. Check if the buyer’s information on the title is correct. If you want to be extra cautious, you may consult an attorney to draft a bill of sale. Both handwritten and computer printed versions are legally acceptable. Besides the VIN and the selling price, your bill of sale must include the buyer’s contact information.

Your decision to sell your rig outside your home state can considerably extend your options. So stop asking how can I quickly sell my RV online and be flexible to offers coming from outside the state. True that selling out of the state has its risks, but you can minimize them by following all the DMV instructions.
