Rainy Day Hairstyles

Rain has hit much of the UK this week and for those of us who were sporting the latest summer hairstyles just a week ago we’re left wondering what we can do with our hair when we’re out and about in all of this rain! Here are a few hairstyles to help you out.

The ballerina bun

This style was a massive hit last year and it’s one that is perfect for almost every season and every outfit. Whether it’s a day on the beach or an afternoon in and out of the rain! Simply tie your hair in a high ponytail and using a hair doughnut pull the hair through and wrap around the doughnut, securing it with bobby pins.

Not only does this style keep your hair in one place, it can also be tailored to your style. If you prefer a more laid back messy style, then gently backcomb your ponytail before wrapping it around – this will create a messier and more volumised bun. Pull pieces of hair down to frame your face and you can even backcomb the crown area before tying it up into a ponytail to give the whole look some extra lift.

The fishtail braid

Braids are probably one of the easiest ways to keep hair neat and tidy when the weather isn’t on your side. Instead of a regular 3-strand braid, use two pieces to create a fishtail braid. Taking an outer piece from the left section, cross it over and add it into the right section. Next, take an outer piece from the right section, cross it over and add it into the left section. Repeat all the way down your hair.

Again this is a style that can be changed depending on the look you’re going for. If you like it messy then add the hair tie a little further down to where the braid has ended. This will give you room to gently tug at the braid to pull it out slightly and make it appear fuller.

It also works on any type of hair whether you have curly or straight hair. Curly hair will give the style even more volume and because it looks fab when messy, then the rain can only add to its laid back style!

The tousled ponytail

Everyone’s go to hairstyle, the ponytail is one of the most fail-safe rainy day hairstyles. But instead of simply throwing it up into a straight ponytail, try a tousled ponytail.

Before tying your hair into a ponytail, backcomb the front and back sections to create volume and leave out a few pieces at the front to frame your face. To get texture in the ponytail, spray some texturizing product such as a sea salt spray to create that tousled effect. If your hair is quite straight, you may need to use a curling tong or straightening iron to create some loose curls. Brush the curls out and then spray some sea salt spray to create the beach look. Now pull your hair into a ponytail.

For a little extra volume at the top of the ponytail, lightly backcomb the hair at the top of the ponytail, or use a small bulldog clip at the top in the middle of the hair – this will lift the top section of the hair whilst remaining hidden!

You can also use clip in hair extensions to give extra length and volume to your ponytail. To keep the clips hidden, create a small ponytail right in the centre of your hair, leaving a big section of your hair out surrounding this ponytail (this hair will then cover the small ponytail.) Next, begin clipping the hair extension pieces around the base of the small ponytail.

Use as many pieces as you like until you get the desired thickness. Now take all of the remaining hair that you left out earlier to create a second ponytail over the first, hiding all of the clips.

This will make a beautiful volumised ponytail. Using a heat protector spray and curling tongs, gently curl sections of the extensions like before to create the tousled look.
