Harvard Training – With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

That quote is so often given as a joke, and first appeared in front of most people in the Tobey Maguire Spiderman films. It is something that is often used in order to be sarcastic, or in other times to make a person feel small and appreciative of the power that they do have. However, it is a maxim that is good to live by, and something that those who attend Harvard, no matter what you are majoring in, should consider in great earnest. After all, we have been given the incredible privilege of receiving our education from one of the most impressive and renown universities in the world, and we will always be able to use that name wherever we go in the world. The name of Harvard on our CVs will, more likely than not, open more doors than we know what to do with. The question that you have to ask yourself is, what are you going to do with that power?

For some people, that power will be their ticket to get that job that they crave. In some cases it will be a particular company that they have always admired, and always wanted to be a part of. For others, it will be a particular position within a company that they are aiming for, and the name of Harvard will probably enable that person to jump a couple of rungs rather than climb the ladder all the way from the bottom.

For others, the power of Harvard will help them to move socially. There is nothing like being able to impress someone that you have your eye on with the name of your college, and some will even drop it into conversation nonchalantly as though they are not really aware of the power and weight that the name of Harvard carries. It may even be that you meet someone that you end up spending the rest of your life with at a Harvard networking event, and that great power will bring you together like a magnet.

And while those sorts of uses of the name Harvard are perfectly natural, they should not be the only uses: for that responsibility should weigh heavy upon our shoulders. With that excellent education and access to companies and names that we could never have imagined before we started our classes there, we should be championing that power, working to help the needy, attempting to change the status quo, removing injustice, and contributing to our societies. Take Dr Howard Katz, for example: his innovative online, certified Botox training program has enabled thousands who would never had had the opportunity to better themselves and their families to run their own Botox businesses.

With great power comes great responsibility. As a new batch of Harvard students start this new semester, now is the time to start considering what it is that we want to be able to do in order to make this world a better place, and we can do so using those skills and connections that Harvard have given us.
